20ft Collapsible Flat Rack

A flat rack whose end walls fold down. Empty, four of them stack into roughly the space of one — which is the whole commercial argument.

The economics of the empty leg

Every freight operator knows the real cost is moving empty equipment back. A standard flat rack going home empty occupies a full container slot. A collapsible one folds, and four fold into approximately the footprint of a single unit. If you move racks in both directions, that arithmetic decides the purchase on its own.

How the ends work

The end walls are hinged at the deck and lock upright for loading. Release the locks and they fold flat. The mechanism is robust but it is a mechanism — it has moving parts and locking gear that a fixed-end rack does not.

What to inspect

On any used collapsible rack, the hinges and locks are what matter. Bent, seized or damaged folding gear is common on hard-worked units and it is the expensive thing to repair. We check this before dispatch and will tell you the condition of the mechanism specifically, not just the deck.

Not for everyone

If your racks will be loaded once and left in place, a fixed-end rack is simpler, stronger and usually cheaper. Collapsibles earn their premium in circulation, not in storage.

A collapsible flat rack only pays for itself if it circulates. If yours will be loaded once and left, buy a fixed-end rack and spend less.
